California EMT Certification – Initial CA EMT Certification

Each applicant for initial CA EMT Certification must complete and provide the following documentation:

  1. Complete and sign an OCEMS certification / accreditation application  acrobat icon with link to the live scan form.

  2. Provide a copy of the “Course Completion Certificate” issued by the initial EMT program attended by candidate:

    1. The Course Completion Certificate is valid for two years from the date of issuance

    2. A valid Course Completion Certificate is required to apply for CA EMT Certification

  3. Provide Identification and proof of age: A valid driver’s license, birth certificate, passport or military ID will be acceptable.

  4. Perform a California Department of Justice Criminal Offender Report Information (CORI) Live Scan. The DOJ Live Scan must be performed at least three business days prior to coming into OCEMS and making application. OCEMS recommends that a candidate for CA EMT certification or OCEMS EMT Accreditation call the OCEMS office first to verify receipt of the Live Scan result prior to coming in and making application.

  5. Provide proof of passing National Registry (NREMT) exam by bringing in the original or a copy of the letter issued by the NREMT or possessing a valid NREMT registration card.

  6. Pay Certification and licensing fees as specified in OCEMS Policy 470.00. NO CASH or Personal Checks accepted. Payment by Visa, Master Card, Discover Card or Debit Cards with the Visa/MC logo. Money order or cashier’s check payable to “County of Orange.” will also be accepted.

CA EMT certification will be issued for no greater than two years from the date a candidate successfully completes the application process. CA EMT certificate will expire two years from the date of successfully completing the NREMT exam.


California EMT Re-Certification Before Certification Expiration Date

Each applicant for EMT RE-Certification in California must complete and provide the following documentation:

  1. Complete and sign an OCEMS certification / accreditation application  acrobat icon with link to the live scan form

  2. Provide proof of completing 24 hours of Continuing Education (CE) during the current certification cycle. CE may be performed in the following manner with limitations:

    1. Completion of a 24-hour refresher course

    2. Completion of 24 individual or groups hours of approved continuing education. Performing greater than 12 hours of online CE in a single day is not acceptable to OCEMS and will result in a audit of work performed.

    3. Provide copies of transcripts of college coursework completed.

  3. Provide a completed and signed California Skills Competency Verification Form--EMSA-SCV (07/03):

  4. Provide Identification and proof of age: A valid driver’s license, birth certificate, passport or military ID will be acceptable.

  5. Copy of current EMT certificate

  6. If your certificate has lapsed (expired or inactive) please see the link for re-certification requirements

  7. If you did not have a California EMT certificate issued by Orange County you will be required to perform a California Department of Justice Criminal Offender Report Information (CORI) Live Scan.

California EMT Re-Certification After Certification Expiration Date

Each applicant for EMT RE-Certification in California must complete and provide the following documentation:

  1. Meet recertification requirements above.

  2. For inactive or expired California EMT certification of greater than on day but less than six months; meet the requirements above under EMT re-certification without any additional CE required.

  3. For inactive or expired California EMT certification of greater than six months, but less than 12 months; meet the recertification requirements above plus complete and submit an additional 12 hours of CE for a total of 36 hours of CE

  4. For inactive or expired California EMT certification of more than 12 months (1 year), but less than 24 months (2 years); complete and submit an additional 24 hours of CE for a total of 48 hours of CE plus successfully complete the National Registry written examination

  5. For a lapse greater than 24 months: complete a new EMT course and required NREMT testing


Orange County EMT Accreditation

Each applicant for OCEMS EMT Accreditation / Attendant Licensure must complete and provide the following documentation:

  1. Complete and sign an OCEMS certification / accreditation application  acrobat icon with link to the live scan form. Submit only one application to apply for both California EMT certification and OCEMS EMT Accreditation concurrently.

  2. Provide a copy of current California EMT Certification card if currently certified.

  3. If EMT certification is from a different certifying entity than OCEMS, perform a California Department of Justice Live Scan. The DOJ Live Scan must be performed at least three business days prior to coming into OCEMS and making application. OCEMS recommends that a candidate for OCEMS EMT Accreditation call the OCEMS office first to verify receipt of the Live Scan result prior to coming in and making application.

  4. Provide a copy of current CPR Certification as specified in OCEMS policy 415.00.

  5. Provide a copy of the OCEMS EMT Accreditation course certificate.

  6. Pay EMT Accreditation fees as specified in OCEMS Policy 470.00.

    NO CASH or Personal Checks accepted. Payment by Visa, Master Card, Discover Card or Debit Cards with the Visa/MC logo only. Money order or cashier’s checks payable to “County of Orange.” will also be accepted.
