The County of Orange provides emergency filing services to funeral directors that need to obtain a burial permit prior to the next day on minor holidays, and Saturday and Sunday between the hours of 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. This service is not available on any major holiday including those that may fall on Saturday or Sunday. The Office of Birth and Death Registration considers an emergency to be a circumstance in which a body must be disposed of prior to the office reopening at 7:30 a.m. on the next business day. Any emergency filing also requires that the death certificate have been signed by the certifier within the time period between the last business day and the day of filing.
The funeral director calls the County of Orange Communications Department at (714) 628-7000 and asks to contact a Deputy Registrar to issue a burial permit.
Communications pages the Registrar on call by beeper.
The Registrar calls Communications who then relays the information from the funeral director.
The Registrar telephones the funeral director. Providing that the death certificate is signed and has an acceptable cause of death listed, the Registrar will register the document electronically and issue the burial permit.
