ORANGE COUNTY RECORDS FIRST LOCAL CASE OF THIS YEAR’S INFLUENZA

(Santa Ana) –The County’s first case of influenza B has been reported to the Orange County Health Care Agency. Influenza type B was reported from a North Orange County child on October 21.

“This is not an unusual time of year to see our first case of influenza,” said Dr. Mark Horton, County Public Health Officer. “However, we cannot predict whether this flu season will be light or heavy, so getting immunized remains the best protection.”

This year’s vaccine supply is expected to be sufficient to meet the nation’s needs and is designed to protect the public from the three strains of influenza virus expected to be present this season. Influenza vaccination is the single most important measure in preventing influenza. It is especially important for people at high risk of serious complications, such as pneumonia or exacerbation of underlying cardiac or lung disease, to get immunized. However, anyone who would like to be protected from influenza can be vaccinated, and many physicians offer the vaccine to their patients.

The County’s annual influenza vaccination program will begin on November 1 and is targeted to protect people age 60 years and older and persons of any age with chronic diseases such as asthma and other respiratory problems, kidney disease, anemia, heart disease and diabetes. In addition, women who will be in their second or third trimester of pregnancy during the influenza season, children on long-term aspirin therapy and individuals with suppressed immune systems are eligible for the County’s flu shot program.

Information about community sites participating in the Health Care Agency’s flu shot program is available by calling the County of Orange Health Referral Line at 1-800-564-8448 or for a listing of other available flu shot resources, visit www.findaflushot.com.
