Physical and Occupational Therapy Services
California Children's Services (CCS)

As pediatric therapists, it is our goal to assist your child in becoming as functionally independent as possible and to improve the quality of life for the children and families served in the medical therapy program.

Medically necessary physical and occupational therapy services are provided to children with physical disabilities at Medical Therapy Units (MTU) located on public school campuses. MTU therapy services are provided free to children who meet CCS medical eligibility criteria for MTU services. CCS eligibility criteria are based on diagnosis and include conditions, such as Cerebral Palsy, Spina Bifida, Muscular Dystrophy and Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Therapy Evaluations
Children are evaluated by physical and occupational therapists upon entering the CCS therapy program. The physical therapist evaluates gross motor development, strength, range of motion, muscle tone, reflexes, and mobility skills. The occupational therapist evaluates fine motor ability, perceptual and self-care abilities. Therapy goals are established in collaboration with parents or caregivers.

Therapy Frequency
Medically necessary therapy frequency is based on the child's rehabilitation potential which is determined by the physician, in conjunction with results of the physical and occupational therapist's evaluation and recommendations.

Home Programs
A written home program is developed to incorporate into the child's daily routine. A home program may consist of:

  • Specific exercises to be carried out by the parent or child

  • Simple and fun games to play with the child that may include skill development or require attention to the child's position

Consultation
Therapists are available for consultation visits:

  • To the child's home to assist in planning for equipment the child might need, or for modifications to the home to allow the child to function at his or her maximum potential

  • To the child's school to collaborate with teachers or other educational personnel who are involved in the child's education

  • To doctor appointments, special clinic visits or other community agencies

CCS Medical Conference vs. Private Physician Coverage
The therapy program requires a signed prescription to provide physical and occupational therapy services. The prescription can be obtained through the CCS Medical Conference at the MTU or a private physician.
