Brucellosis is a disease caused by bacteria (Brucella species) in animals such as sheep, cattle, goats, pigs, and dogs. People can get infected when they come into contact with infected animals or animal products, including raw milk and other unpasteurized dairy products. Brucellosis causes a range of non-specific symptoms such as fevers, sweats, pain in muscles/joints, and fatigue which may last for a long time. In addition to occurring naturally, brucellosis is considered a potential bioterrorism agent/disease of the second highest priority (Category B; https://emergency.cdc.gov/agent/agentlist-category.asp).
Brucellosis in humans is immediately reportable in Orange County. To report a case, health care providers/facilities should call OCHCA Epidemiology at 714-834-8180. Zero to five (0-5) cases of brucellosis were reported in Orange County each year between 2013 and 2017.
