Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) is one of the most common human viruses. Most people get infected at some point in their lives. EBV spreads easily through saliva, other body fluids, and contaminated objects. EBV infections in child may be asymptomatic or mild and short-lived. Teenagers and adults are more likely to have symptoms as part of mononucleosis (“mono”), with fatigue, fever, sore throat, and swollen lymph nodes, which can last for weeks to months.
EBV infections are NOT reportable in Orange County, unless associated with meningitis or encephalitis (which should be reported within one (1) working day by phone (714-834-8180) or fax (714-560-4050) to OCHCA Epidemiology).
