Listeriosis is a foodborne illness caused by bacteria called Listeria monocytogenes. Most people do not get sick from Listeria but pregnant women, newborns, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems, can develop severe infections including of the bloodstream and brain. If a woman is pregnant when she is infected with Listeria, the fetus or newborn baby can become severely ill. Occasionally, outbreaks occur from food contaminated with Listeria.

Listeriosis is reportable in Orange County within one (1) working day of identification. To report a case, health care providers/facilities should call OCHCA Epidemiology at 714-834-8180 or fax records to 714-560-4050. Five to 16 cases of listeriosis were reported each year in Orange County between 2013 and 2017.
