Human Papillomavirus (HPV)

  • Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a group of common viruses passed from one person to another during intimate sexual contact.
  • Although most infected people never develop symptoms, HPV can cause warts (papillomas) and sometimes cancer of the cervix, vagina, vulva, penis, anus, and back of the throat.
  • A vaccine (HPV vaccine) is available to protect against cancers caused by HPV and is part of the routine immunization schedule for children and adolescents, as well as young adults.
