Lead Week is a national annual campaign during the last full week of October to bring awareness to and prevent childhood lead exposure.
This year's theme, Blood Lead Testing, encourages parents and caregivers to ask their healthcare provider about blood lead testing if they think their child has been exposed to lead.
A blood lead test is required at one and two years old if your child:
Is in a program such as Medi-Cal, WIC, or Head Start.
Is at risk for exposure (California data shows that almost all kids are at risk).
Children at risk need to be tested at 12 and 24 months when lead exposure is most dangerous. Older children may need catch-up testing up to age 6 if they were not screened earlier.
Everyone is encouraged to get involved with Lead Week by participating in events and sharing resources about preventing childhood lead poisoning.
