(Santa Ana, California) - The National Weather Service (NWS) has forecasted cold overnight temperatures throughout inland and coastal Orange County cities beginning Friday, December 10 through Monday, December 13. Overnight temperatures in some areas will dip to the low 40s. Colder-than-normal temperatures increase the risk of cold-related illnesses like hypothermia, especially for those who are more sensitive to extreme weather changes.
Due to the forecast of inclement weather, the County Cold Weather Emergency Shelter will be activated for 24 hours on Thursday, December 9 from 7 a.m. to 7 a.m. on Friday December 10. When exposed to cold temperatures, your body begins to lose heat faster than it can be produced. Low body temperature may make you unable to think clearly or move well. Hypothermia occurs most likely at very cold temperatures, but it can occur even at cool temperatures (above 40°F) if a person becomes chilled from rain, sweat, or submersion in cold water.
“When prolonged exposure to very cold temperatures occurs, it is important to make certain that you are protected from hypothermia. In addition, it is critical to check that seniors who live alone, your neighbors, pets and vulnerable populations are safe during this time,” said Dr. Regina Chinsio-Kwong, Deputy County Health Officer.
Residents are also cautioned against using their kitchen range or oven to heat their homes. Home furnaces and heaters should be inspected periodically, with needed repairs performed by a qualified and licensed heating or plumbing contractor. If space heaters are used, make sure there is nothing within three feet of the heater that could catch on fire, such as bedding, drapes, or furniture. Never cover your space heater and never leave children unattended near a space heater. If electric power is lost during a storm, never use a gasoline powered generator indoors, in a garage or near doors or windows where air may enter a home due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless gas that at high levels of exposure can be fatal. Low levels of carbon monoxide poisoning can be confused with flu symptoms, food poisoning or other illnesses and can have a long-term health risk if left unattended. Some of the symptoms of low-level exposure include shortness of breath, mild nausea and mild headaches. Moderate levels of carbon monoxide exposure can present with headaches, dizziness, nausea, and lightheadedness. Every home should have a carbon monoxide detector, which is very similar to a smoke detector.

(Santa Ana, CA) – To lessen the spread of COVID-19 during the holiday travel season, the OC Health Care Agency (HCA) and John Wayne Airport (JWA) are pleased to announce that beginning Wednesday, December 8, no-cost, self-collection COVID-19 testing kits will be distributed to travelers at JWA.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, travelers arriving in the U.S. are advised to get a viral test 3-5 days after travel, regardless of vaccination status.
“This is another example of the important work we have been doing throughout these past two years to protect our community during COVID,” said Chairman Andrew Do, First District Supervisor. “Bringing COVID tests to travelers will only help to encourage more people to keep getting tested to support early detection and prevent COVID from spreading.”
“The holidays are about spending quality time with family and friends,” said Vice Chairman Doug Chaffee, Fourth District Supervisor. “This is also a time for us to come together and protect our loved ones however we can, which includes continuing to get tested against COVID if we are traveling and in close contact with others who may be unvaccinated.”
Supervisor Katrina Foley, Second District, stated, “Testing saves lives, which is why it is so critical that we make it as easy as possible for people to have access. Making these convenient tests available to the thousands of travelers who arrive in Orange County everyday will help prevent COVID-19 variants from spreading in our community. (Santa Ana, CA) – On November 26, the World Health Organization declared a new COVID-19 strain, B.1.1.529, as a variant of concern (VOC) named Omicron based on early evidence that it has several mutations that can impact how it is transmitted.
Generally, if a variant is thought to be more contagious or likely to cause greater illness or severe disease, or may impact treatment or vaccine response, then it is considered a VOC. More is still being learned about how the Omicron variant spreads, infects people, and responds to vaccines. It is currently unknown if Omicron causes more severe COVID-19 illness than other variants or how it might impact response to treatment.
“Although we are still learning about this new variant, it’s important to understand that new versions of the virus will continue to emerge as long as there are large proportions of people who are unvaccinated,” says Dr. Regina Chinsio-Kwong, Deputy County Health Officer. “Please know that vaccination remains the most effective way to reduce everyone’s risk of getting sick, being hospitalized or dying from COVID-19. Between November 24 and November 30, the seven-day average COVID-19 case rate dropped from 7.5 to 6.3 per 100,000 people and the average number of daily COVID-19 cases decreased from 242 to 204. The positivity rate also declined from 2.7 to 2.3 percent, hospitalizations increased slightly from 188 to 196, and ICU admissions increased slightly from 49 to 52 per day.

In recognition of World AIDS Day and the 2021 campaign theme, “Ending the HIV Epidemic: Equitable Access, Everyone’s Voice,” the OC Health Care Agency (HCA) recognizes the key role that our local communities have in the HIV/AIDS response. World AIDS Day unites community efforts to stop new HIV infections, increase awareness of HIV, support those living with HIV, and remember those who have lost their lives.
“Prevention works, treatment is effective and people do live long and productive lives,” said Dr. Clayton Chau, HCA Director and County Health Officer. This year has been especially poignant as we mark 40 years since the first five cases of what later became known as AIDS were reported. Worldwide more than 75 million people have been diagnosed with HIV and in Orange County, 13,825 people have been diagnosed with HIV since reporting began in 1981. Our community members can help end the stigma of HIV by getting tested, knowing their status, and supporting those living with HIV.

(Santa Ana, CA) – Based on the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the OC Health Care Agency (HCA) encourages eligible children and youth ages 5 and older to be vaccinated against COVID-19 as soon as possible.
According to a recent study by the CDC, hospitalization rates due to COVID-19 remain high in children ages 5 to 11, with nearly 1 in 3 hospitalized children under the age of 18 being admitted to the ICU or put on a ventilator. Nearly half of the hospitalized children in the study had no known underlying medical conditions, showing that children can be severely affected by COVID-19.
“Widespread vaccination remains the most effective way to protect yourself and everyone around you from getting sick or hospitalized with COVID,” says Dr. Clayton Chau, County Health Officer and HCA Director. “This includes protecting family members who may be at increased risk of getting very sick if they are infected. We encourage parents and legal guardians to get their eligible children vaccinated as soon as possible. Vaccinating children ages 5 and older can also help keep them in school and allow them to safely participate in sports, playdates, and other group activities.”
COVID-19 vaccines are widely available throughout Orange County for children and adults ages 5 and over. Residents are encouraged to access the most convenient option available to them to get their shot, including pedtricians’ office, local retail pharmacies, healthcare providers, or online at Vaccines.gov, MyTurn.ca.gov, or Othena.com. Status of COVID-19 Cases in Orange County
Between November 18 and November 23, the seven-day average COVID-19 case rate dropped from 7.6 to 6.8 per 100,000 people and the average number of daily COVID-19 cases decreased from 245 to 220. The positivity rate remained steady at 2.7 percent, hospitalizations dropped slightly from 194 to 187, and ICU admissions increased slightly from 47 to 48 per day.

(Santa Ana, CA) - The County of Orange Cold Weather Emergency Shelter Program will be available for service at the California National Guard Armory in Santa Ana starting on Wednesday, December 1, 2021 and remain available through Thursday, March 31, 2022.
The Cold Weather Emergency Shelter Program at the Armory in Santa Ana provides a total of up to 80 beds per night for adult individuals experiencing homelessness in Orange County. Program participants will receive a nutritious meal, access to showers, and a safe place to sleep.

The Cold Weather Emergency Shelter will be operated by Volunteers of America Los Angeles (VOALA). The operating hours for the Cold Weather shelter at the Armory are from 5 p.m. – 7 a.m., seven days a week. (Santa Ana, CA) – In anticipation of increased gatherings over the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, the OC Health Care Agency (HCA) continues to encourage residents and visitors to get vaccinated against COVID-19, including a booster shot if they are eligible, and to exercise safe precautions to prevent the spread of the disease.
“We must continue to stay vigilant in doing what we can to protect one another, especially our loved ones and neighbors who are most at risk of getting sick and hospitalized with COVID,” says Dr. Regina Chinsio-Kwong, Deputy County Health Officer. “With vaccines now available for children ages 5 and over and booster doses available for fully vaccinated adults 18 and over, we encourage you to complete your recommended shots if you are not fully vaccinated or are eligible to receive a booster. Vaccination remains absolutely critical in helping us to combat the spread of COVID in our community.”
Today, November 19, the FDA expanded its emergency use authorization of the Comirnaty (Pfizer) and Moderna COVID-19 vaccine boosters to all adults ages 18 and over, paving the way for people to receive a booster shot at least six months after completing their primary series.

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) offers the following tips to keep everyone safe from COVID-19 during the upcoming holiday season:
Get vaccinated (against COVID-19 and flu), including a COVID-19 booster shot if eligible
Stay home if you are sick
Get tested 1-3 days before a family gathering, or prior to any travel, even if you have no symptoms, and test again 3-5 days later upon returning home
If your gathering includes individuals who are unvaccinated, keep your gathering small, short, and outdoors, and wear a mask over both your nose and mouth
Gather outside or increase airflow in indoor spaces by opening doors and windows
Since the Comirnaty (Pfizer) pediatric dose was first authorized for emergency use (EUA) by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in children aged 5 through 11, 8.4% of this population and 69.6% of children aged 12-17 have received at least one dose. Between November 8 and November 15, a total of 23,792 children and youth ages 5-17 received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, representing over two-thirds of total vaccine doses administered in Orange County.
“Getting this newly eligible population vaccinated will help reduce transmission in this age group, keeping schools going and keeping schools safe – leading to a safer winter and start to 2022,” says Dr. Clayton Chau, County Health Officer and HCA Director.
As indicated by California Governor Gavin Newsom, students attending California schools will be required to be vaccinated beginning the term after the FDA lifts its EUA and grants full approval of a COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 5-11 and youth ages 12-15. (The Pfizer vaccine is already fully approved for individuals aged 16 and over.)
The earliest date in which students may be impacted by this requirement is either summer 2022 or the start of the 2022-23 school year. For example, if the EUA is lifted and a COVID-19 vaccine is fully approved for children and youth sometime between January 1 and June 30, 2022, the earliest date in which the mandate would go into effect is July 1, 2022, impacting students and school staff at the start of the 2022-23 school year. Clarification on exemption
If the mandate is generated by either CDPH and/or the Governor’s Office, both medical and personal/religious belief exemptions are allowed. If the COVID-19 vaccine mandate for students is part of a legislative law, adding to the current other 10 vaccines legally required to attend public, private and charter schools, only medical exemption is allowed.
Status of COVID-19 Cases in Orange County
Between November 11 and November 18, the seven-day average COVID-19 case rate dropped from 8 to 7.1 per 100,000 people and the average number of daily COVID-19 cases decreased from 257 to 228. The positivity rate declined slightly from 2.8 to 2.7 percent, hospitalizations from 219 to 208, and ICU admissions from 57 to 48 per day.
