Behavioral Health Substance Use Disorder Services administers alcohol and other drug prevention, treatment, and recovery services in Orange County. Mental Health and Recovery Services (MHRS) Substance Use Disorders (SUD) works in partnership with California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) to reduce alcoholism, drug addiction, problem gambling and drug use related deaths in OC.
Drug overdose (poisoning) is now the leading cause of unintentional injury death in the United States, causing more deaths than motor vehicle crashes. Opioids – both prescription painkillers and heroin – are responsible for most of those deaths. This report presents the population demographics and opioid emergency department visits and deaths across the county over a period of five years.
